Concentrated Paint in Sustainable Pouches: A Packaging Innovation in Architectural Coatings
Key takeaways from this newsletter:
- Sherwin-Williams introduced a concentrated paint in a pouch this year under the Ronseal brand.
- Sustainability will continue to influence coating formulation and packaging.
Earlier this year, Sherwin-Williams partnered with sustainable packaging provider Mondi to introduce a concentrated shed and fence paint packaged in a 950 mL pouch.(1) Sold under the Ronseal brand, a UK-based manufacturer of paints and stains and a subsidiary of Sherwin-Williams, the product launched in February in the UK market. To prepare the paint for use, consumers simply mix the contents of the pouch with four liters of water in a standard plastic bucket.(2)
From a sustainability and supply chain perspective, the pouch format offers clear advantages. It reduces packaging waste, lowers transportation costs due to its concentrated form, and requires less shelf space—making it attractive to both retailers and environmentally conscious consumers.
This concept isn’t entirely new to architectural coatings. About five years ago, Canadian manufacturer UCP Paint introduced its “Premier” brand at Canadian Tire in a pouch format, emphasizing portability and reduced mess through an integrated pouring spout.(3) However, the product’s current availability is uncertain, as it no longer appears on Canadian Tire’s website.
Similarly, concentrated formulations have long existed in niche categories. Field marking paints are often supplied in concentrated form for on-site dilution.(4) Traditional milk paint, made from casein, lime, and natural pigments, is another example. It is offered in powdered form by brands like Old Fashioned Milk Paint, for use on walls and furniture.(5)
Will concentrated paint in pouches gain broader traction? Time will tell. But innovation in coatings isn’t limited to formulations alone as it can extend to packaging and application too. As sustainability continues to influence product development, we may see more packaging-led breakthroughs shaping the future of the industry.
